What is Montago

Pronounced Mon-tä-gō

The name itself is a combination of Montana and Otago, a region in New Zealand that just felt like home while on an extended travel year abroad. It immediately reminded us of Montana’s dramatic alpine landscapes and foothills with semi-arid grasslands and large lakes. Both lie close to 45º parallel N and S respectively which lends to similar climates bringing an immediate sense of home. Growing up in the foothills of mountainous landscapes, it gave us a sense of comfort and familiarity even though we were quite literally on the opposite side of the world and that’s exactly the experience we strive to create for every time you take a sip of our coffee and visit our space, A sense of home and comfort and belonging whether you’re a world away from home or just down the street.

Rachael Weidlich

Rachael Weidlich has been working in coffee for over 15 years and has managed three different coffee shops/cafes. She is a Montana native (shout out to Laurel) who loves creating and fostering community growth and education of subjects she loves, particularly coffee. She previously worked at two different coffee shops in New Zealand where she learned the value of adapting to one’s surroundings in order to serve a varying customer base.

Steven Ladefoged

Steven Ladefoged grew up in Colorado, where he developed a lifelong love for fishing, skiing, and the outdoors. He has lived in Montana on and off for the past 13 years, first working as a fly-fishing guide on rivers in both Montana and Colorado. Along the way, Steven discovered a passion for coffee and has since immersed himself in learning about everything from brewing methods and roasting to farming practices. Outside of coffee, you’ll likely find him skiing, biking, enjoying great food and drinks, catching live music, and helping build community in the best damn town in the West.
